I was more thinking of how we went from the ecstasy of the tango to the agony of him using what he thinks might be his last breath to tell her he’s sorry. Quite the change from his BM reaction, yes?

He also had time to think about it in H3. He walks down to meet her and draws his weapon and does the Hollywood style rack the slide* thing and the then points it at her. She then ask “how did you know?”
I believe that in BM she truly caught him off guard and that he did not foresee any of what happens next.
*hollywood LOVES that dramatic gun stuff even if it doesn’t really make sense

I’m not trying to say he knew it all was coming in H3 either. I don’t want to take away his character arch. I’m just pointing out that when people are caught off guard they can react in a less calculated way.

Doubtful. People generally don’t use the slingshot method for a brass check, and he would have done one before starting the mission that day.
