COP29 is on the verge of collapse as vulnerable nations walk out.
The Summit was already weakened by most western leaders preventatively announcing they would not be themselves present.
(Since early talks were already bad)
The UN’s COP29 climate summit was on the brink of collapse on Saturday after negotiators representing 80 small island states and other vulnerable nations walked out of talks. The alliances of small island nations and least-developed countries left the negotiations on how to finance the transition to a low-carbon economy and pay for the effects of climate change after receiving an updated proposal of $300bn from wealthy nations, up $50bn from the initial offer. The G77 group of developing nations had called for at least $500bn.
The walkout came after Germany accused Azerbaijan, the talks’ host, of backing attempts by fossil fuel producing countries to hijack the summit, which has already overrun by more than a day as efforts to seek consensus floundered.
Several people involved in the talks told the Financial Times that countries led by Saudi Arabia and Russia were attempting to block any references to advancing last year’s agreement to transition away from fossil fuels.
CGP Grey did a very interesting about the line of succession with US Presidents, including touching on the scenario if a President becomes physically or mentally unwell but refuses to resign, the Vice President can attempt to remove them. Which is very interesting considering Trump’s age, and his clear declining mental health. But nothing about the President-elect dying before being sworn in.
When COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev stepped to the podium at the closing meeting of the Baku climate summit on Sunday morning, hoping to clinch a hard-fought agreement on global climate finance, he carried with him two speeches.
One was crafted around a hoped-for deal being struck, while the other for the possibility of a summit-collapsing impasse, according to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.
In the end, Babayev managed to gavel through the $300 billion finance plan to help developing nations cope with the soaring costs of global warming over the next decade before critics had time to object, allowing him to read the more positive speech.
He praised the agreement as a breakthrough and shamed the deal’s doubters as “wrong”, even as many of the climate deal’s intended recipients slammed it as woefully inadequate.
Babayev’s preparation for different outcomes at the divisive summit in the Caspian Sea nation of Azerbaijan reflected what many in the audience had already known before it began: the Baku climate talks were never going to go smoothly.
Expectations for a deal were depressed by worries of a looming U.S. withdrawal from global climate cooperation, geopolitical turmoil, and a rise of isolationist politics that had shunted climate change off much of the world’s top priorities list.
And what’s worse is that most votes for him came from voters that are abroad which is madness. You leave Romania for a better life in the west and you still vote for a Pro-Russian…
If I ever become prime minister banning the foreign vote would be my highest priority, you can’t fuck off to another country for any reason other than long-term overseas work and still think you deserve a say in the country.
Apparently only half your country voted or something so hopefully all the sane people will vote in the second tour election.
That’s usually the percentage of voters, Romanians are not interested anymore, either they are ignorant or the thought of any politician makes them sick to their stomach. And Romanians are just stupid since we allow clowns in the government, like her
Diana Sosoaca, George Simion and Calin Georgescu were once part of the same party, all three using social media like TikTok as a tool to spread their craziness, all three being againts the EU, NATO and pro-Russia.
Well it was still close the first time, it is anyone’s game. But if this year is any indication as to who will win? I think you better learn Russian or prep a fuck-it-and-run kit before it is too late.
Blin, davai borscht babushka, cyka balalaika. And hey, most of my internet friends are Russian (not fans of Putin mind you) so maybe I’ll have a chance to visit them now… when they send me to a gulag close to their location
And just like that, Trump will never face justice. And they could have got him on the classified documents case easily if Merrick Garland had just let him go to the 6th circuit a year ago to remove Aileen Canon from the case. It was a slam dunk; he fucking admitted that he did it! And now, nothing. Message to every other asshole in this country: if you’re wealthy, powerful, and/or connected, we don’t care if you break the law, you get a pass. Officially, and for all time.
He already killed McGregor once, or didn’t, would I have to hypothetically pay after 47 failed the first time?
And I’m pretty sure he didn’t get paid for his contracts from Whittleton Creek onwards. He basically went rogue from that point. Except for maybe Akka on Ambrose Island.
