Because they are tanks used to store and pressurise the gas used to fire the shells before being expelled. Normal shaped silencers have been tested since the 60s and failed. It is also more of a muffler since there was only a 15 decibel downgrade in sound, you can still hear a shot in a mile radius/

The decibel scale is logarithmic, so a downgrade of 15 decibels means that the sound energy has been reduced by a factor of approximately 31.6.

Edited but not by much, the original has every instance of “Twink” be “Twinkies” as in the processed sponge cake. This was back when Hostess rand ads for Twinkies and fruit pies in comics.
I think the Spider-Man ads are the most famous version of them they still get referenced every now and then even in the Spider-Man Ps4 game.
