Seven Deadly Sins Act 6: Envy

Greed is one of IOI’s most perplexing decisions ever. Dropping a new DLC trailer making it look like we’re getting proper missions only for it to be escalations with filters on them, the escalation can be remade via contracts and worst of all it sucks. It also was made straight after finishing the deluxe stuff. They didnt put their best foot forward with the DLC, they couldve experimented, added something else to sweeten the deal or even lowered the price for earlier escalations. Instead they released one of the worst escalations of recent memory as a premium. Strange. It’s a shame that it’s taken the 7DS so long to find its footing, something with the quality of Envy would’ve been a great introduction to this new mini campaign but instead it’s the penultimate installment

Not the best effort, sure, but at least it’s done the best job so far of capturing the essence of its sin. The others get close but I don’t think they lean into them properly enough.

I think that the fact that it was an escalation is exactly why it was so poorly received at first (and still by some). The community of players has long known what an escalation is. We have a preconception about it and we’ve discussed it at length on this very forum. We also have a perceived hierarchy of mission quality that puts Bonus Missions at the top and something escalations rather near the bottom.

When IOI announced that they were coming out with a new DLC, our minds immediately went to New York and Haven. We still have the taste of the 5 Mastery Level Carpathian Mountains and the Deluxe Edition that was nothing but extra escalations and we started asking ourselves whether paying for more escalations was worth it or not. Many in the community largely decided on “not”.

Once they came out and we got to see what IOI was doing with them, many started to change their opinion and when we saw how good something like Lust could make an escalation, we got a lot more charitable towards that type of content. Greed left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouth and a lot of us thought that “Greed” was exactly the right Sin to start on, pun intended.

All in all, most of the 7DS content has been really enjoyable, despite the false start.

I am amazed at how different Mendoza feels with just changes to floors and walls. Definite change in vibe.

My evaluation of the different 7 Deadly Sins is whether the Hitman Live Team mixes things up a bit, where each Deadly Sin is not a repeat of the other and that there is some basis for their decision-making centered around the concept of the particular Deadly Sin.

This one is different and creative, and so I am satisfied. But I might be one of those who is too easily satisfied with any new Hitman content, as long as it isn’t too restrictive, relies too much on RNG, and/or require twitchy reflexes with a console controller.

This was a fun Escalation. Also delivers a good challenge if you want to set up everything without having to wait for your target to get in place (especially level 3). Level 1 could have benefit from having 1-2 more targets.
The item rewards could have been better but overall I’m pleased with Act 6.

Level 1 (1:51/5*) 8th place
Level 2 (3:49/5*) 3rd place
Level 3 (4:28/5*) 1st place

I let the rival kill me with the freezer kill! :joy: (more of a soft lock than a kill)

He was about to hit the trigger and I ran inside to steal the kill from him… but he bested me!

I hoped a guard or someone would open the door… but it didn’t happen.

Really enjoyed this one! I haven’t managed it Silent Assassin yet, but I’ve played it through twice - the second time I let The Rival get all the kills, and the voiceover from Envy was great

Love the changes to the map. The lighting looks wonderful.

Has anyone noticed that the wine bottles don’t break when pacifying someone? I’m not sure if they break when thrown.

I love the suit.

It doesn’t fit in Bangkok, day or night.

It’ll blend in nicely in Chongqing and Berlin though. Maybe Miami.

Wonder if this was going though Agent 47’s mind :stuck_out_tongue:

They absolutely break when thrown. I knocked out the female worker by the wine press with one and it shattered all over the place.

It was OK. I might actually replay it to get all the challenges. Unlike Sloth. fuck that noise. I’m glad the other guy just walks. But it still grinds my gears that he’s allowed to walk into restricted areas like he owns the place and I have to creep around. He’s there to kill people too, he’s a threat just like me.

And a question for people who have replayed this, do the targets routes shift every play through? I ask because I watched a video of someone else playing this after I did and I noticed that Hector seemed to have different pathing than when i played it.

I’ve found that the targets will change their routes based on the other target’s status, to a point. For example, the guy you have to snipe has a pretty basic back and forth route until he is targeted by the Rival, at which point he changes his path. They certainly don’t change every play through though.

Now maybe I didn’t watch him long enough when I did it, but that’s what I saw.

See, to me, the reasons I did not like Greed had nothing to do with it being an escalation. I’ve talked about it elsewhere on the forum but:

  1. Instafail conditions are bad. They discourage experimentation and learning. Maybe I get spotted and lose my SA, ok fine, I’ll restart in a bit and try again, but in the meantime, let me run around and test the routing. “Getting spotted” is a much worse instafail condition than “only shoot targets,” because shooting a non target is kinda on you, whereas getting spotted during a run is often just down to a timing miscalculation.

  2. The coins. This was the worst design decision in any 7DS, and it was implemented terribly. First of all, button holding to pick up 6, 7, 8 coins in a row is boring. More importantly, often the coin drops were bugged (players reported not getting 60, or having to kill the targets in a predetermined order to get all 60 which goes against the spirit of the game), or the coins themselves clipped through the terrain (one of mine went under the helicopter and I couldn’t get it — do you have any idea how frustrating that was?).

I personally enjoy escalations, especially as they’ve gotten more creative in H3. I did not enjoy Greed, not because it was a rote escalation with a visual filter and slowed down speech (which I thought was funny), but because it was rage-inducing NOT because of my playing but because of poor implementation.

These are both fantastic points and two that I had completely forgotten about. The instant-fail conditions in ANY mission should be removed. Let the final stars and ranks determine how well you did. If I don’t care about 5 stars and “SA”, why should the mission care? Give me my one star and let me finish the level the way I want.

I didn’t personally run into any coins landing where I couldn’t reach them but I did miss one at the end where I had to replay the whole thing to get it. I suppose that was the result of doing them in the wrong order.

I distinctly remember though that even before Greed came out people were complaining about it being “just another escalation”. Their arguments may have changed after they got to play it, but the focus prior to release was on it being an escalation rather than a full-on bonus mission.

Absolutely. There’s a large contingent (especially over on Reddit) of folks who hate escalations. You can’t please everyone. Really it just goes to show how impactful and wonderful the game is — people just want more more more.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Picking up coins is sooo much fun!!11111

@Axwage

Picking up coins is not pleasing anyone as far as I can see. It was just a dumb decision which have since gotten better.

Umm… I enjoy picking up coins in the main storyline gameplay. The Greed escalation’s gimmick, collecting the coins, was just my cup of tea. Not to mention, as I’ve said, it drives home the sin of greed more directly than the subsequent seasons did.

Sorry, I meant to say in Greed. I also pick up all the coins if there are more than 1 in a map

I never found this out but whats weird is the targets still drop coins even if you dont kill them. Couldnt you just knock the targets out and only kill the first person
