Hitman 3 - The Durian Debacle

Hitman 3’s has a rather nasty problem right now; Emetic Weapon Power Creep, all thanks to the recent inclusion of the Durian. Let’s talk about that, as well as how games are balanced, gameplay design philosophy, and how it’s beneficial for both players and developers to listen to one another.

This has been in development for at least seven weeks, give or take, and is one of my more ambitious videos production wise, containing video clips from at least 10 other games spanning two and a bit years.

Anyway, enjoy!

Was this intentionally released on Oil Canister day (which is another item that needs nerfing because of its explosive accident properties)? :joy:

This was set to release three Monday’s ago. So no, not deliberate. I only realised what was happening today when I was walking around last night. Because IOI’s roadmap for September was so barren that I couldn’t remember when anything is.

The delays were mostly Vegas related, as well as animation in general just being really REALLY tedious sometimes. Hair is the bane of my existence. There’s a reason I have it tied up.

There’s some stuff I agree with you about, and others not really.

Mainly, sure, we’ve had a strange power creep in terms of poison items getting more and more legal, to where there’s 2 options for remote-poisoning emetic or sedative.

It’s a little strange how, after many years of items getting removed/abandoned/changed due to how they trivialize certain elements of the game, IOI all of a sudden is like, “here, free legal starter poison items”

But personally I don’t really mind their inclusions into the inventory space (I haven’t unlocked them yet due to some Hitman boredom, but I’ll get around to it)
I’ll always mourn the loss of a wall-piercing sniper, or the Fire Accident potential of the molotov, or even being able to carry two breaching charges in one batch. And these new items? Well, they’re just meh. I probably won’t use them much anyway.

For me, Hitman is fully a single player game, leaderboards don’t matter to me, I don’t really care if we get a laser that can shoot through walls (though I would sincerely question why we would need it and how it impacts Hitman’s overall tone and feel to have)
So I don’t really see why including stuff like the Egg or Durian is problematic in the long-run.

I don’t think they’re totally necessary to have included as unlocks (and I feel like IOI was just scraping the bottom of the barrel for seasonal unlocks recently – Pinot Noir being the strange tell) and I will honestly be fine whether I unlock them or not, just sticking to the regular Hitman spy items that have risk and style.

I’m a roleplayer kind of 47, hehe. I’m usually looks over substance. …So what do I know?

Sidenote: about the your content itself - Man, dude, you are living my dream!

It might take an excrutiating amount of work, but your animation passion really shows in these, uh, “think-pieces?” “live-service impressions?”

Point is, it’s always been a silly little dream of mine to want to put my thoughts out there and gush about video games online, in video format, yet doing it in a fully/mostly animated form for “funzies” I guess
But I uh, haven’t done the work to do that yet…

But you? Dribble, you constantly impress with these 3D animated videos even if they’re just full-on reviews or analyses of IOI and Hitman’s current trajectory.
It’s really cool and I’d put you up there with some of the coolest artists in the Hitman community. (Even if not fully-hitman themed)

Thank you for your perspective, it’s nice to see.

I get why you and other “role-play” players (?) wouldn’t been too annoyed at this. As you said, it’s not likely you’ll be using these items anyway. But I’m sad to say that this perspective is just not something the game can have as an overall design philosophy. You can’t allow everything to be powerful otherwise it breaks the satisfaction of completing the missions’ puzzle “as intended”, so to speak, by the developers. Players already like the sneaky, suave, plausibly-deniable assassination experience, and there has to be some reality checks to conform to that gameplay design, something which in past years they’ve been fairly good at. This year though? Sedating people and making people sick when you stand literally in front of them is a break from that. It’s an experience that just feels…well…cheesy, and as if IO haphazardly added to the game. Items still need to feel good both to use (repeatedly), and in how they function.

Even leaderboards, something which I’ve seen come up in the Youtube comments, only matter past the first hundred or so people. I still check my standings because, by the time it gets to me, i’m usually within the six-hundreds range or so, and I quite like to know what my standing is, even if it means very little overall. The number still matters in some capacity that far down, just that the further up you go, the more obvious it is how much IOI need to have a good 'ol scrub of the times.

I wouldn’t have minded the molotov so much if it were an accident if you shot it (bit like the gas canister), but as it was, it was terrible, for reasons I already described in the video.

Thank you for the praise! These aren’t the best animated bits I’ve made for my videos (I think the TS6 one is better tbh), but I do still enjoy making them. If I get an idea in my head, I’ll usually animate it.

That’s deliberate on my part; I’ve tried committing to TF2 and Heisting Game II before now, and Valve and Starbreeze decided to screw everyone over. The former for several years due to lack of updates, bot crisis etc. I basically moved on, and learned that being a variety channel was where I did the best, even if the view count doesn’t show it.

I like talking about technology and the games I play, and having an on-screen presence is something I want to continue doing. I genuinely adore Hitman, it’s a puzzle game that satisfies me, even in Freelancer to some extent where that still has issues, and I just wish IO could actually see what they’re doing half the time, a lot of it not good for the game, and that’s not just about Item balance or game balance either.

Also, don’t expect another video for a while. I have other projects to do that need my attention (namely a commission and several mod fixes for Community Patches.)

Also also, It’s VERY interesting seeing the like ratio and disparity between this very comment and the one Chicken made above. Very interesting indeed…

I went ahead and made an “extra bits” video, just as a bit of a funsies upload. Contains a timelapse of animating hair, and the speedrun I showcased of completing Sapienza.

@TheChicken you might find this interesting!
