Helldivers is still a really enjoyable isometric shooter game, I’ve been hoping for a sequel that can add and iterate on its existing systems and environments.
Hopefully this supposed sequel that definitely isn’t real (wink, wink) can do that.
Whatever it is, Arrowhead Studios have something in the works and they’re being pretty guarded about it, according to this goofy video
So I’m gonna give my two cents since I’ve been playing the game early, I do not enjoy this game.
The gameplay loop and overall narrative progression is the worst in the series and is closer to Mafia 3, but unlike Mafia 3 you have to complete sets of a individual side activities to continue forward. While someone can argue that this has always been the case in the series due to the Respect System of Saints Row 1 and 2 where the game encouraged the player to go play the side content to progress storylines unlike those games the reboot is Soulless and at times very devoid of anything that makes it stand out in this series where we had A narrative revolving around Aliens and Jane Austen as a narrator.
Santo Ileso manages to be a devolution of Saints Row The Third and 4’s Steelport which was also a devolution of what is arguably one of the best sandbox environments to come out of the 2000’s that being Stillwater from Saints Row 2. For a city that is suppose to be emphasized in some areas for its Spanish and Western identities you drive around lifeless street with no character whatsoever.
Graphically this game isn’t really great, and it’s doesn’t particularly help with the lighting system as well where the game looks best during sunrises and sunsets, but looks terrible at night. NPC Character models look off and it doesn’t particularly help that the the Crews pet Cat is low detailed as well.
COOP on the Xbox Series X is very much unplayable where it will crash after cutscenes almost everytime. While the game is very much beatable from beginning to end on Singleplayer outside of the copious progression issues you can encounter it gets very jarring after awhile.
Volition desperately needed a win and I feel the Saints Row Reboot wasn’t what they were looking for. Their stance of essentially moving on from the past ultimately wasn’t the right call where people wanted a Gritty Narrative with a living open world like Saints Row 2, but with the quirk that came from The Third. There can be a balance between the two, but it just missed the mark.
That being said if you’re looking for a narrative about a group of millennials doing crime Watch Dogs 2 is a pretty good alternative to this.
Watchdogs 2 is actually really good, as someone who recently finished playing through it I can safely say it won’t hurt to buy the Gold Edition on sale I know PS Store usually gives it heavy discounts during their marque event sales.
It is really sad because it looks like the Reboot actually cribs Vice City’s old mechanic of buying a front property then doing missions to unlock its full potential. Most criminal games don’t have that sort of structure and it seemed like the more free-flow Saint’s Row would have been perfect for it.
Shame that nowadays game devs / publishers would rather reboot franchises and gamble away years of hard work building a fan-base by releasing great games than just taking a risk of coming up with new IPs.
Ever since the trailer reveal SR fans were very vocal about the reboot yet the developers said that they “stand their ground” about the decision to reboot the series. A kick in the balls to your loyal fans that bought your games throughout the years / releases is never a good idea.
I can’t see it. Nothing a fan would have suggested could have possibly saved this game from the most well-meaning “It looks somewhat generic” to the stupidest “Too woke, this is cringe.” would have saved the game since all of those complains were rational but had no basis at the time and nonsense culture warrior gibbering respectively.
No amount of fan-service, caving to fan demands, proper continuity, sufficient amount of “wokeness” (A word I wish would disappear from discourse about this game (and from life in general)) or PR could have possibly saved this game. This game is a victim of a poor production and an even worse development. I wouldn’t be surprised if the BtS of this game was a shit show because it has all the hallmarks of a bad development cycle.
What I am trying to say is they should have made another Red Faction game! Those Martian capitalists won’t kill themselves.
Conceptually it’s a great idea in execution it’s one of the worst if not the worst I’ve seen simply due to how you unlock its full potential. While VC brought Unique Missions strands which led to passive income. Saints Row took the activity side content, but made it a former husk of what they were in the past where it all feels the same with nothing standing out between everything. It’s simply not fuck and I’d rather play the final levels of Septic Avenger on Co-Op for Saints Row 2 (which is notoriously Hard and Unfair) then this.
I think if the game had a proper vision and the basis behind creating a gang wasn’t to not be broke and to beable to pay rent and student loans who knows what we could of expected. The whole wokeness aspect never really bothered me simply due to the fact that Saints Row 2 has a literal sex slider despite having a menu for genders. So to some degree the series has always been woke, just not to this scale. And it doesn’t particularly help that Twitter went ahead and made a fake image about women’s rights that has taken off.
When in reality it’s just me being a Cinnabon Manager in his 50’s from Omaha Nebraska taking on those pesky capitalist with my group of millennial besties, but we can’t forget the cat in the group, definitely not the cat!
Well, we can at least follow Volition’s message. If you’re in you’re early 20s, stuck with a shitty job or worse, unemployed with almost no money to pay rent then it’s best to just go out and commit crimes
I remember when Saints Row was about a Sociopathic Gang Member turned Leader who literally kidnapped a Gang Leaders S.O and got them crushed in a Monster Truck Rally.
Even to this day I still remember most of the characters from SR3 all because they were memorable and unique from other games. Shame that Volition wants to distance itself from what made the series funny
I would like to categorically state for the record I didn’t think it was a problem though to be fair I should think you know I am not that type of person. I was merely saying that the complains “wokeness” was symptomatic of a lot of fans not having any valid concerns about the quality of the game before release, they managed to drown out people that had valid concerns.
But like I said it doesn’t matter because no amount of effort could undo the game’s quality, the game just seems to have had a cracked foundation and then the house caved in because of it.
The Weebatar has totally used his “right to free speech” as a defence for shouting slurs when he loses. I mean even if it was real it shouldn’t be a problem, they have every right to have opinions on current events and express them. If anything the framing is actually kind of clever, seemingly too clever for it to have been the game’s actual writers it seems.
But as a brief aside can I just mention if there was ever another medium and creative industry that is being undercut in both its quality and in its perception by others then the Weebs and the Gamers are doing a good job in their race to the bottom.
I have spent time on my country’s unemployment programs so I can definitely say I would be more productive and richer had I simply turned to crime. Also technically poor and young people are most likely to commit crime since they are poor and young.
The new Destiny 2 expansion looks awesome, they’re bringing in an awesome looking Cyberpunk esque city on Neptune, as well as a new subclass with… grappling hooks??
Lightfall is the equivalent of Infinity War within the Destiny universe, with our Endgame coming in 2024, if anyone is interested, all available expansions are free to play until August 29th.
Check out this video if you’re interested in catching up to speed, its only 5 minutes
I find it cute that the sociopathic nobleman is so dedicated to his delusional collection of pipedreams. MENA despots always have such a strong dedication to their wildly dysfunctional megacity projects.
