47, obviously.
I’m afraid if I specify my favorite number, somebody will gain immediate access to my bank accounts. So 69 it is!
25. It’s funnier than 24.
Honestly, don’t know how I forgot that one…
No one has mentioned 42? Huh…

My own opinion
We should have known they were plotting to take over.
I’ve read the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit fairly young (maybe 9 or 10?) and have re-read them several times over the last 40-ish years. I never found the writing to be that cumbersome or difficult. Maybe it’s just a preference thing?
Probably personal preference, as in many things, but I wouldn’t say they’re difficult to follow more that his writing style doesn’t inspire me to care to follow
The opinions of good friends
Never.
Usually, I just decide based on my own interest.
The “super smart” (just ask them, they’ll tell you) modern audience has no idea what they want half the time and critics usually don’t judge on the same criteria that the general public does. As a result of the above, you typical see a large divide between critics and audiences AND deep splits within the audience scores. All that’s left is if trailers make me interested and reading reviews for laughs. After that, whether I end up actually liking something is first and foremost predicated on whether or not I was entertained. If yes, why and if no, why not?
(With rare but notable exceptions, I tend to enjoy things more than the average audience so if I look at aggregate audience scores beforehand I generally like to see it average out to “ok”)
