Why is Chongqing so cramped?

To be honest, I prefer the Chinatown missions in Absolution to Chongqing

I quite like the Chongqing map, but considering what they marketed it as, they really let themselves down.

I think it’s a great map and the more you explore it the more you find that there are several ways to approach both areas (The Block/ICA facility) but when you go back and read IOI’s description of the level and what sort of experience they were promoting, it’s a huge let down to see that what they actually gave us.

Nothing is crammed in anywhere. All the shops are shut and there is hardly anyone about (yes it is like 2-3am but still). There are no food stands at all. There is no hustle and bustle.
If they hadn’t promoted the level so much and had let players just experience it as is, I think there would have been hardly any complaints

Why Chongqing is cramped?

  1. IOI purposely create variety in their maps, some cramped, some more spaced out. Each is meant to have a very different feel.
  2. Rendering is a problem with rain, and draw distances of the distant cityscape in Chongqing. IOI had to scale down number of NPCs and other details to keep the framerate high.
  3. Game director, Mattias Englestrom stated that large complicated maps like Mumbai in Hitman 2 were less played than simpler maps like The Bank. IOI purposely kept the maps less complicated, because the average player prefers this type of map.
  4. The narrative arc for the Chongqing level is focused on the ICA facility and infiltration of the database. Therefore the greatest care and detail were made in the ICA facility of the Chongqing level. The rest was more filler in comparison.
  5. IOI are independent now, and they do not have the same budget and the many years in which they could dedicate to develop their first locations such as Paris and Sapienza with Square Enix’s money.
  6. Whether cramped or spacious, or over detailed or not enough detail, most will find something to complain about with every level. The notable feature of Hitman 3 was that all the levels (except perhaps the last mission) are puzzle masterpieces, breathtakingly beautiful maps, and detailed with care and attention, including music, sound and environmental effects and cleverly written NPC dialogue.

They need to make another version of chongqing… no rain(good for render) more npc more alive city and open areas… no ica facility it will fix the dissapointing of the map.
The solution: DLC

This is the most accurate on what I dont liked on the china location.

I think the city is gorgeous. I could watch the skyline and listen to the ambient noises for hours. I just don’t care for the targets and their locations. The ICA facility reminded me too much of Hokkaido. I didn’t find the Block very interesting either.

I liked and agreed with your post overall, but I do think there’s an argument to be made that since they focused on smaller maps they should have done more than 5 of them. Though that’s where the “they’re an independent studio now” part comes into play.

that’s a shame. mumbai is probably my favourite hitman map of all time.

Bank boring after few games too small
Large map good for long term a lot of options

I´m sort of wondering whether it would be possible for IO to actually add interiors/accessible areas into the map for a potential bonus mission? Up until now, the practice has been to deny access to certain parts of the map in a bonus mission/escalation, but could they do the opposite for this one?

Yeah, I’m thinking the same thing.

If a bonus mission-type of level were to be made and there’d be a change in the time of day, it would be pretty weird to just have a Restaurant, an Arcade and a Laundromat open for business. Give us a few more locations or apartments to explore.

I really like the late-night atmosphere of Chongqing - the sense that most of the city is asleep, with only a few night owls wandering the quiet streets. Large, bustling environments such as Mumbai, Marrakech and Miami have their own value, but I love the contrast we see in Chongqing.

As several others have already remarked in this thread, I don’t think Chongqing would benefit from having a larger footprint. Instead, I agree that it perhaps just needs a few more spaces opened up. One or two more accessible apartments and businesses would turn Chongqing into an ‘S’ tier map for me.

Even that would be great. An all-night bar with a few patrons drinking, an extra apartment or two (with something actually interesting in them). Anything to make it feel like more than just one gigantic ICA facility.

With Chongqing i was really expecting a Chinese version of Sapienza

Chongqing was the most disappointing map, so many wasted opportunities for a map in China. The underground lab could be in any other place in the world and you wouldn’t know, Hush’s building was too boring. China and Japan maps from other hitman games were much more atmospheric.

Looks like the main feature of the map is so much advertised advanced rain.
Maybe I’m too silly, but the more I play this map the more I see nothing special in it.
If the main feature of that rain is wet clothes, then all the more I see nothing special in it

Need to be something more alive maybe in
DLC or something

I wish the map was like sleeping dog
They should copy paste from them … to copy things :rofl:

Well, it also has especially many Clones in it. Even Santa Fortuna had a few unique, Civillians in the Form of some of the Tourists. (Mendoza unfortunatly continues this trend, so unlike Chongqing, it’s atleast a good Mission with good Targets.

What disappointed me the most about this map was not even its size. It was the fact that, despite nailing a very moody and distopian feel akin the blade runner movies, basically half of the map is actually a clean, bland, sanitised facility. They could gave either gave us a bigger map around the ICA facility, or just give us a consistent design across the entire map
