It is heart-warming to know that even a decade later Criterion still put day/night filtering in through updates instead of having it in the game.
“Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”
The update does seem to be pretty sweet with a brand new car to the series, even though it’s not new at all. But DeLorean is an absolute classic. Funnily enough, during the singleplayer story, Rydell does mention driving a tricked out DeLorean back in his day, so now it seems like a tease for what’s coming to the game.
Yeah well, this is the part where I don’t particularly care about, but it’s nice to see they want to be fully committed to improve the game’s online experience.
Ah you reminds me that I always set my time in Paradise City at nightfall, just because it’s nice to always have sunset and its lighting in the background. I can’t recall any other games allowing players to adjust time of day or even how fast the time goes.
I hope DMC pay royalties to Robert Zemeckis because those movies brainwashed an entire generation of people into thinking a DeLorean was in any way a desirable car.
Today is the release day of Unbound’s Vol. 3 update, along with good news to Xbox Game Pass owners! Starting next week, Unbound will be part of the subscription for new players to try it out. Not bad at all.
Siiiigh…
This is how you know to call it a night on NFS…
I was only at heat lvl 2! (But I got caught on a corner doing a U-turn, couldn’t speed off fast enough after getting unjammed.)
Vol. 4 update will be revealed soon on August 8, 3pm UTC. This time is all about Porsche it seems.
Ah Porsche and NFS are like an old couple, go way back into the early days of the series. And the infamous exclusive deal as well, which actually benefited RUF to be more well known by players across other racing games.
By the way, the bottom car from the pic is Porsche’s electric Taycan in the brand’s 75th anniversary livery.
Neat! The subreddit says this was kinda predicted since there’s a sound file with the Porsche Taycan name (but it’s only one file whereas all other cars have multiple – apparently its used for an NPC electric car model)
There are also two other cars not in the game yet teased in the files i can’t remember off the top of my head… which could mean they’re the featured cars of two more volumes, potentially giving the game one full year support.
Honestly I’d be surprised this game made it past Update 2, but its cool.
Is the DeLorean tied to this past “season’s” Speed Pass?? I’ve wanted to avoid the online mode until I’m done the main story, but since they’re two different progressions I guess I might as well check it out.
Nice! I will have to check out the other leaked vehicles to see what may be coming next. The game’s support seems to be a year long, I do like to see something that is not online-focused in the future though.
Not really, but you still have to jump into multiplayer to unlock the time machine car for both offline and online modes. Yeah I know, I actually don’t bother to unlock it yet as well.
On top of earning some sweet XP and Bank, if you crush 12 Linkups challenges you will get a sweet reward to show off in Lakeshore… and not any reward: the iconic DMC DeLorean (1981) .
Need for Speed Unbound Vol. 4 available on August 16th
- Porsche Taycan Turbo S and Porsche 993 with a special bodykit
- Porsche-themed online Playlist
- New battlepass
- More online activities
- Free McLaren F1 for returning players from NFS: Heat
- More premium packs
One brand new car, couple of new online features, and some new paid packs. Gotta be honest, this still won’t bring me back or even make me want to play online. But hey, It’s nice to see a full electric car returns to the series. Last one was the 1st-gen Tesla Roadster in MW2012. No nitrous flames will come out from Taycan’s non-existent exhaust pipes though.
Vol.4 Customs Pack
Finally, the Customs Pack will have you reminiscing from game’s past as you’ll get your hands on three new and exclusive custom builds: Eddie’s NISSAN Skyline GT-R V·spec (1993) from Need for Speed Underground, Rachel’s NISSAN 350Z (2008) from Underground 2, and Joe’s Polestar 1 (2020) from Heat.
Well this is not really necessary, since you don’t have to pay for these cars in Heat. It’s EA doing what they’re famous about.
With the reveal of the Porsche electric car, it got people talking about the use of electric vehicles in the series, of which there aren’t all that many.
Someone mentioned there was a Tesla Roadster in Most Wanted 2012, which surprised me a little, I don’t remember it.
It’s true. There is a Tesla in it, and it produces barely any sound other than a hum that increases the faster you get (and lots of squealing tires on drifts).
I only ever completed a few races and focused on other cars, so I finished its setlist just to try it out. MW12 is fun.
I also finished the setlist of the Pagani Zonda R, the one car in the game the stats say I apparently never touched.
It’s good, super fast from the DLC, but I’ve found a lot of the Ultimate Speed races have lame intros. A lot are reused and it’s just “watch your car go Vroom Vroom, Zoom Zoom from different angles”
Like, there’s tons of creative ideas they could have used to show “Ultimate Speed”.
Anyway check out the intros for these events:
In 2012 they beamed drugs into your brain!!
3:45 is literally “man jumps off building, car saves him??” This game is too f’n weird.
my brain: “2012! that is long ago! that must be that Most Wanted you played”
facts: “nope, the one you played is 7 years older”
Year 2 Roadmap
And what a surprise! They actually keep their promise of updating Unbound.
I knew everyone of us are very much looking forward to the Y4 roadmap reveal for Hitman tomorrow, but here’s the Y2 roadmap for Unbound, plenty of new things that will come to the game! Stuff like Audi’s return and new game modes inspired by classic titles. We may not get any new game soon, but this is not bad at all!
A new game update! This time, we’re going Underground!
Featuring:
-
Overhauled drift mechanism
-
Drag race. Both modes are very much inspired by Underground games.
-
League. It’s PVE races in online free roam, along with community objectives.
-
New car: BMW M3 Competition Touring '23, which they fixed the ugly nose for you.
-
New car: Ford Mustang Dark Horse '24. A new generation Mustang, this particular model makes its debut in console video games.
-
Returning Car: Melissa’s Eclipse. Despite being less known than Eddie’s Skyline, the intro it featured in still makes me very excited for street racing!
-
QoL improvements: stuff like improved UI elements, and new textures like the new default license plate and reworked rims. A shame is that this is the only thing that makes it to the singleplayer side of the game. The actual new contents above are all exclusive to online for now.
Damn this intro still rocks hard! Anyway, enjoy racing everyone!
The game came out 2 years ago… it’s still getting more content!
Wow…
This latest addition? Vol 9: Lockdown. A new PvPvE “extraction-type mode” vs an onslaught of cops.
Also, for the first time in NFS history, you can unlock and ride a motorcycle!
ALSO, it seems that they’ve brought back the one the only Razor from NFS Most Wanted! Wooohoooo let’s hope he’s as menacingly cheesy as he was 14 years ago…
It’s indeed incredible that Criterion support Unbound for this long. With recent updates being themed after classic titles, they do a great job at celebrating the series’ 30th anniversary as well. Of course they have to go with MW05 theme, with this being said to be the last major DLC. I wish there will be something for singleplayer in the update, though. We will see then. Still, bike and 2 JDM legends look gorgeous!
Speaking of which, how does this game do here at this point? I am no multiplayer type but I always liked these tuning games.
In case someone has an itch for the good ol Underground 2, a mod came out the other day that adds a bunch of optical featrues, bodykits, Undergound 1 kits, additional rims and in general many QOL fixes.
Ah okay let’s see. So basically, the singleplayer campaign has not changed a lot after 2 years of support. You will still have to deal with the calendar-based progression, meaning there’s still requirement of cash and cars at the end of each week, in order to take part in each qualifiers. Each car parts purchase can’t be reversed so it’s kinda important to carefully invest your money into anything. Heat still remains high after you do plenty of races, meaning you will have to do some stealth driving to avoid cops during freeroam.
Not much additional contents are available for singleplayer. 2 cars added prior to Vol. 05 update (namely Mercedes-Maybach and BMW M2) can still be unlocked entirely offline. All other additional contents (cars, character skins, profile banners) are either only unlockable via multiplayer or for multiplayer use only. I don’t know if cars unlocked via multiplayer can be transferred to SP progression, since I never try out online.
To put it simply, Unbound took a similar approach to Grand Theft Auto Online, where most of their added contents are for multiplayer mode. There’s a few subtle QoL changes, but don’t expect too much if you’re like me who prefer singleplayer.
Oh yeah! I like when modders put efforts on making lore-friendly extra stuff. They give me a feeling that the game receive its proper extension while maintain its original identity. Excuse me that I am using GTAO as an example here again, but I think that is a bad example of how the game turns into something I don’t recognize. Anyway, I will see if I can have UG2 installed back to my laptop so I can try the mod out.
So it’s official. Derek Hamilton (Razor in NFS MW’05) is back as the announcer for the new Lockdown Mode in this update!
He posted his thoughts and thanks on instagram. Very cool to see him embrace this old role!
BMW collabed with EA and built the iconic M3 GTR into a real thing! It’s on display in Germany if anyone wants to see it for real
Also the Lockdown Mode is pretty cool and intense, especially if you spend as much time as you can in a match.
The “Lockdown” zone expands, plunging the city and highways into a blue-hued blackout. Zooming around collecting money, avoiding cops, and grabbing higher tier rides.
If you get wrecked, you gotta wait for a revive (though there’s nothing saying this which is weird) and if you’re dead, then your ride gets impounded in Lockdown Mode for 24hrs.
So you’d better find a good car and escape with it, or you’ll either have an average replacement or nothing at all!
Weird, the NFS UNBOUND game has a page on “How To Play” but it’s just a QR code that needs you to scan with your phone for that page.
At the very least they should have included this legend of the different icons in the mode.

Indeed it is! Razor can be said to be the most memorable villain in the series. Even with voice only, it’s still wonderful to hear him mocking us again and remaining edgy as he always was.
What makes it even better is it’s a true racecar which was used to win races. Now they gives it a makeover. Just wonderful!
Interesting. So it turns out to be a separate mode outside of regular free-roam and playlists. And there’s a risk and reward element in which you may either earn a lot or temporarily lose your car. It could be pretty hard to collect all 15 Blacklist rides. I suppose that’s the challenge.
