I haven’t seen the movie yet, so I’m not too keen on looking much up for fear of spoilers, but this passage in an interview with the director is quite neat
Seems like a lot of legal wrangling had to be done.

“It was super-important to me to get a bunch of third-party cartoons, because if this is going to be some sort of a celebration of animation, it can’t just be a celebration of Disney animation,” Schaffer says. “You don’t want it to feel like an ad for Disney Plus.”

Just as with Who Framed Roger Rabbit or the cross-company video game character cameos from Wreck-It Ralph , the movie presented a copyright challenge. “The [characters] you see in the movie — sometimes we had to try two or three other things before we found one that could be licensed,” Schaffer says. “It was a process. […] You don’t usually come out of a movie and want to thank the lawyers, but we genuinely owe the Disney lawyers for being team players. [They] super stayed optimistic about it, and really saw the value of the third-party stuff, and they had to really work hard. … It’s easy for me to go, like, Oh, it would be cool if My Little Pony was in the movie, and they’re like, running in the hallways […] but then [the lawyers] have to go call Mattel and pitch them the movie, and tell them it’s not making fun of [the characters], and then I have to get on, and then blah, blah, blah. So it was a process. But you know, it makes [the movie] so much better."

just watched chip and dale rescue rangers and i saw a quote that perfectly summarized my thoughts.

“if who framed roger rabbit is a love letter to animation, chip and dale rescue rangers was a death threat to it”

I dislike how more money went into the different licenses than the animation

When the multiverse ends the next big thing will be paraverses then every film will look like someone modded a Skyrim game.

We just got home from TopGun2. It was tons of fun. Sorta a half sequel half remake. Reminded me a lot of how StarWars 7 follows pretty closely the format of Star Wars 4.

Flying was intense- better than the old one, music was good but not as good as the old one, and they handled the Ice Man issue as best they could. It was worth the $20 for two tickets, but you have to suspend disbelief a little with the mission target and the “plan” that is supposedly the only way to get to that kind of target.

Gonna go see it tonight. Looking forward to it.

Just watched Old for the first time. What a twisted movie.

Was that the forgettable m night movie based on that one obscure comic

Fantastic Beasts 3

It was okay. Better than the second but not as good as the first one. This gave more insight in the relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore. Its a continuation of the story we already know. The movie has some great moments, though sometimes a bit long-winded. Also the ending isnt really spectacular. Raising the stakes was a bit lacking at times. Not perfect but still good enough for a 7/10.

Probably not, because I sure ain’t forgetting this one.

My thoughts exactly and I’ll even give it the same score. I liked the expanded roles some of the cast got, though one could also question why some others were sidelined. And I don’t think I’ll ever quite be able to wrap my head around McGonagall in the 1930s. But, moving away from characters, I always appreciate an expanded look into the greater wizarding world so seeing some of the machinations of international politics was nice.

I like this series, and Newt is a great protagonist for trying times, but it always feels like the films are missing something. Before anyone says Harry Potter, it’s actually that I think these should have been novels first and then adapted into movies. Writing a novel and writing a script are not the same and among the many reasons the Harry Potter films generally work so well are the books they’re based on; even the shorter ones are so filled with content that even if stuff is removed or altered or shuffled around there’s still so much left. I can tell from watching the Fantastic Beasts films that they would been fantastic books turned pretty good/great movies instead of just above average/good ones.

Guys, help! I think I’m a little obsessed with Doctor Strange 2; I went back to see it not once but twice… Also, I’m amending my score upwards from 8 to 8.75/10. There’s some of those inconsistencies you notice when you watch things enough but mostly it’s a pretty good story that forces Wanda and Doctor Strange to confront things about themselves. It serves to simultaneously further Strange’s character arc and (seemingly) complete Wanda’s. Raimi’s visuals and direction are great and I’ve become more enamored with Elfman’s score with each viewing (I think it’s the occasional guitar riffs artfully sprinkled into what is otherwise a horror/paranormal theme). It’s not my favorite MCU film but it’s up there.

(it probably doesn’t hurt that Wanda and Doctor Strange also happen to be two of my favorite characters in the MCU)

I loved the last installment in the Jurassic World Series! Especially the nods (and even bigger than that) to the very first movie.

Not enough people got eaten by dinosaurs though

Dare I say it, Dreamworks’ The Bad Guys is the best animated movie of the year so far.
Well, I do have an issue or two with it, but at the very least, it’s one of the best. It was so much fun. Great heist movie.

Obviously the stand-out best part of this movie is the animation itself.
So smooth. So playful. So expressive.
The chase scenes specifically are very frantic but very tight. The Police Force is especially ridiculous but interesting to see, as they converge and pile onto each other like a ravenous mob.

The character designs are fantastic.
How the hell do they do it?!! Seriously! Diane Foxington really does live up to the hype!! Upbeat, sly, foxy, self-assured, her character is so well-crafted!

The main Bad Guy group are good fun as well, though personally I feel many of them feel more flat, personality and character-wise. But they’re all pretty cute in their own ways. Wolf and his lure of the Good Side was cute, and I liked Snake’s detail of somehow having a full row of teeth when pronouncing some syllables.

As for the Bad (the bad kind of bad) I do think the public’s sudden acceptance of the group during their Gala scheme felt a bit too quick. Wolf is the only one who does a good deed, and somehow the rest of the group is kosher too? Would have wanted a few reluctant scenes of the rest “accomplishing” good too.

I have not yet seen Ghibli’s Lupin III movie, but I’ve seen some clips, and this movie really evokes zany Lupin anime vibes. Will definitely put that on my watch list for the future.

Next, I’m gonna see Everything Everywhere All At Once tonight, and I’ve heard plenty of hype for that one. I’m super excited.

The Bad Guys a.k.a Lupin the Furred was ok (though i get why someone would love this movie), it felt very generic but the animation was pretty good, though one thing i couldnt get over is that the main cast is all animals while the rest of the world is all humans. I don’t know why they did this other than to appeal to children or worse, furries, but it was the only slight annoyance i had visually.

Castle of Cagliostrio is a great movie but i think the better Lupin movie to compare Bad Guys to would be the 3d animated Lupin the Third, The First, which is an incredible anime movie with a really fun story and characters

I picked a great pair of movies to do a double-bill on. Today was really fun.

Everything Everywhere All At Once is EVERYTHING you would want out of a Multiverse movie.
Doctor Strange 2, with its much, much bigger budget, somehow pales in comparison by miles. At least in my humble opinion.
One of the best movies of the year to me no doubt.

It’s about an older woman, Evelyn Wang, who is suddenly recruited to save the multiverse by harnessing the powers of her alternate selves. (There’s more but it’s best to go in to this blind)

A24 does some great films. But this one has left me so stunned that they took such a wild and expansive concept and rolled with it all the way. It really does go Everywhere.
It goes to some WILD universes, has so many jump-cuts between dozens upon dozens of alternate versions, and uses many different film genres and styles of presentation.
I can’t quite explain the surreal impressiveness of it easily or without spoiling moments I’d rather keep a surprise on first viewing.

I need to sit and process this, really. Since it’s a 2h15m movie with a lot packed into it. My brain was on Analysis Mode most of the time, yet looking back on it now it’s still so much to sift through.

It’s also coincidentally got some great thematic elements for Pride Month viewing! Happy June Pride Month by the way!

Someone please discuss this with me if you’ve seen it. I just need to gush about it :weary:

Fun wordplay

I agree it felt kinda generic in terms of plot, but honestly its a G-rated new Dreamworks IP (edit: actually not really, it’s based on books!), so I’m kinda okay with it. I do think that the ending was subversive enough, with the Bad Guys still doing heists, but for a bit nobler purposes. Plus Diane keeping her thief secret.

Possibly to appeal more to children, but I’d say it was to easily establish the message of “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”. All the Bad Guys are species that a child would consider scary or “bad”. Wolf, Snake, Tarantula, Shark, Piranha. Makes sense. Guinea Pigs are obviously adorable and trustworthy and Foxes I guess can play both sides?
Also, uh, maybe a smidge of Furry given some of the physical comedy in the film (that guinea pig scene comes vividly to mind)

I’ll definitely watch The First after Cagliostro, just so I can compare the shift from 2D to 3D.
I remember seeing a trailer for it – no idea of what Lupin III is – and being so, so impressed that it looks like it perfectly replicates the zany 2D anime style in 3D CGI. You really don’t see that in that kind of dimension swap.
