Fast Times at Vegan High

Well, I am not afraid of death. I think Mark Twain said something like “I was dead for a billion years before I was born, why should I fear the billion years after I die?”

I’m 32. If I was dying now, I’d be terrible afraid and distressed. Hopefully, I’ll get to live to an age where I welcome death.

There’s something we agree on. I hope I can at least live long enough where I won’t mind it. I doubt it, but I have hope.

I think we have a different definition of what “feeling” and “pain” means. The article you posted says that they lack nerves and brains, so they don’t feel pain. I agree with that. That you have some arbitrary idea that plants may “feel” things in their own way is all up to you, that’s not what I’m arguing against. They react to stimuli, that’s the scientific consensus.

In my opinion, if you buy something, you’re supporting it. You may not like how it’s produced, but by putting money towards it and consuming it, you’re supporting the practice.

It would be like me saying I don’t support X and then buy products from a company that takes part in X.

Killing animals can sometimes be deemed necessary, sure. Eating them is entirely unnecessary as proven by the countless people who don’t partake in it.

I heard you and responded accordingly by telling you that we actually do.

Categorically false. I even went as far as to explain you that B12 has nothing to do with meat vs plants, and becomes “problematic” because we wash produce and therefore wash away the B12 producing bacteria. Consider the supplement as part of the diet the same way you should probably consider supplementing D vitamin during winter. And on that note, studies have shown that many omnivore people may also have B12 deficiency so it’s probably a good idea to supplement it anyway.

And why are you comparing meat to lettuce?

Because that’s not the premise of the argument. The fact you’re dancing around it and refuse to realise that feeding and growing crops to raise a cow for 18 months requires much more plant “suffering” than just eating plants directly, makes me think you’re arguing in bad faith? Again, if one cared about and wanted to minimize the “suffering” of plants, that person should become a vegan.

They may be alive, but they’re not conscious which is what vegans care about.

The last points you make about the puppy versus the lobster has nothing to do with what I asked you. I asked you if you equate you dogs to plants or only farm animals. To which you answered

This is what’s weirding me out.

I’ve got plenty to retort on this, and believe me I want to, but we’re getting nowhere and convincing each other of nothing, and I don’t think either of us is really getting what the other is trying to say, so imma disengage this now and we can pick it up again later in a more appropriate topic if it comes up again.

This is not me trying to convince you. I actually don’t care what you specifically think. I’m engaging with you in the hopes that others might read and give veganism a second thought.

You’re welcome to reply to me in a pm if you want. I’m bored out of my mind anyway, friend

Sorry, I have very few pleasures in this world as it is. While I certainly want better conditions in the industry, giving up meat is not a sacrifice I am willing to make.

fair enough

I think being alive is so amazing that what mitigates my fear a lot is that no matter what happens im just thankful for the experience at all. I’m in awe!

I too feel a lot of gratitude towards being alive.

I reeaally wish I could get a glimpse into the future. What will video games look like in 500 years? Will we keep on the technology race or will it stagnate? What will humanity look like in general, will we eradicate war and hunger? Stop working 5 days a week? I’ll never know :frowning:

If technology stagnated you would not need to get a new PC or console every decade.

I wish it would do that now.

I’m certain most every one hold human life in higher regard than animal life but the comparison is obvious?

Holocaust was atrocious. So is how we treat our fellow earthlings.

But the aim of the Holocaust was to systematically exterminate an entire population group. Not a good comparison.
