Usually before bedtime or while meditating, I like to have drone ambient playing. Stars of the Lid are a favorite of mine when it comes to ambient music:
I only discovered Stars of the Lid for the first time last year. I’m a big fan of post-rock and ambient music so I’m kind of amazed I never came across them sooner. I interviewed a musician I really like for a “Ten Albums that Changed my Life” piece, and she included “And Their Refinement of the Decline” on her list. Based on her words alone I knew I had to check it out. I actually fell asleep with that album on last night!
New Gojira record tomorrow. Expecting big things. This song is good.
Love is defiance
Defiance is necessary
Love is disobedience
Love is politicalI see no medals on any of us
And still we’re the ones who compete
We fight like roosters and on our heads they bid
I just learned there exists multiple pop-up Kirby Cafes in Japan, featuring Kirby-themed food, merchandise, and a Jazz-remixed soundtrack to accompany the location.
Candiria are so painfully underrated that it hurts my soul. It’s really common for heavy bands to have jazz influences now but Candiria were doing it as early as the mid 90s. Genre bending batshit mental heaviness. And they absolutely killed it live too, they had one of the best drummers ever (Kenneth Schalk). They’re still doing stuff very infrequently but they had a nasty tour bus accident which seriously injured most of the members and killed their momentum. They did a few records after that but were never quite the same.
I love Candiria. I found out about them after hearing one of their songs play during the trailer of Decampitated. They make some fantastic songs, and I agree they are very underrated. That’s sad to hear what happened with the tour bus incident.
This is the song that started it all for me:
Paradigm Shift! What a great song. They actually re-recorded that for the C.O.M.A Imprint - I think I slightly prefer that version. Shame it’s not easy to find online.
